As a general rule, Laguiole knives do not like water

The natural materials of the handles, such as precious woods or horn, are particularly sensitive to humidity; it is therefore preferable to take precautions when cleaning and to wipe your knives well before storing them in a dry place.

To clean the blade of your knives, use a non-abrasive sponge with a dishwashing liquid to degrease the blade without scratching it, then rinse it under warm water and dry it carefully with a soft cloth.

Important: Do not put the natural handle materials of your knives under water, let them soak nor wash them in the dishwater.

Some of our knives are suitable for the dishwasher and are marked “waterproof”. For this purpose, use mild detergents and a gentle short washing program. Aggressive detergents should be avoided, as these can impair the appearance of the handles in the long term. After the rinse cycle, wipe the knives with a dry, soft cloth to avoid water residue.

For the table knives of the series “”Tradition”, the following materials are dishwasher safe :

  • Compressed fabric
  • Black and opalescent acrylic
  • Densified ash (by washing in the dishwasher there might be a slight “bleached” effect, which does not affect the quality of the material subject to compliance with the above recommandations)

Suitable dishwasher-safe models of the series “Signature”:

  • T6 LOG (Tableknives by Philippe Starck, stainless steel monobloc)
  • T6PUTMANFRD (Tableknives by Andrée Putman, handles in ashtree)

The blade

After use, we recommend that you clean the blade with a soft cloth or slightly damp sponge and then immediately wipe it with a dry cloth. To maintain the longevity of the blade, you can apply a little bit of oil (cooking oil) on the blade, to create a protective film.

If you have dishwasher-safe table knives, you should immediately wipe the blade with a soft cloth and dry it carefully so that no residue from the dirty water of the dishwasher is deposited.

Sharpening of the blade

For a regular sharpening in order to preserve the optimal quality of the edge of your blade we advise you to sharpen on a natural stone, (moisten the stone for about ten minutes before sharpening) by keeping a sharpening angle of 20°. You will find below a demonstration video.
Be sure to sharpen your knife regularly to keep its edge. If the edge of the blade needs to be revised, we advise you to contact our Forge de Laguiole after-sales service.
Of course, we recommend a normal use of our knife, the blade should not be used as a lever or a screwdriver, which could cause damages not covered by the warranty.

The handle

  • Wooden handle: A wooden knife can get a slight patina over time, to protect it and keep its beautiful appearance, you can apply a little linseed oil to nourish the wood.
  • Horn handle: horns are very sensitive to temperature variations and humidity, so be sure to keep your horn knife in a dry place at room temperature.
  • Stainless steel, aluminum or acrylic handles, compressed fabric, synthetic materials: The maintenance of these knives is facilitated, these materials are less sensitive as natural materials could be. For cleaning, simply wiping with a damp cloth and then with a dry cloth will do the trick.

The bolsters

The bolsters are very easy to clean. A short cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient.

For storage, we recommend a box or knife case so that the knives do not touch each other and so that scratch marks (especially on the metal parts) can be prevented.
