The history of the Forge de Laguiole

Label

La Forge de Laguiole has a unique place in the history of the Laguiole knife.

From the middle of the 20th century, the wars – especially the First World War, caused a practically stop of the production of Laguiole knives in the village of their origins.

More than 150 years after the creation of the Laguiole knife, the dream was born to bring back the manufacture of this legendary knife to the place of its origin.

In 1985, a team of visionaries, elected officials, artisans, farmers and lovers of the Aubrac plateau united to make this great project a reality.

In 1987, the Forge de Laguiole was founded, turning this shared dream into reality.

Since its creation, the Manufacture Forge de Laguiole is one of the most iconic monuments of the village of Laguiole. It is visible from the road to Aubrac and attracts the eye and curiosity.

This magnificent building has been designed by the designer Philippe Starck. The manufactory is imposing and contemporary, dressed entirely in aluminum and glass. The iconic blade, 18 meters long, proudly rises to the sky and was made in Millau in the Aveyron department.

At the Manufacture, you can visit all the ateliers and discover the steps of making a real Laguiole knife: from the forge of the blades and bolsters/mitres, the sawmill with the cutting of the woods and horns, to the assembly and finishing of the knife…. We invite you to visit the secrets of manufacturing in the heart of our Forge de Laguiole manufacture.

Our name, Forge de Laguiole reflects our expertise and our difference: forging our blades from French steel sourced from the Aciéries de Bonpertuis.

Our logo, designed by Yan Pennor’s, takes the symbol of the blade and echoes the blade seen on our manufacture.
