Located 20 km from Montpellier, the Pic Saint-Loup raises up its proud peak to 658 metres amidst the garrigue. On its crests, you can admire what remains of the castle of Montferrand and reach it by a one-hour hiking trail GR 60.

A legend tells that the mountain and therefore the Peak were created by the sledgehammer that the giant Hercules threw to protect his friends, the shepherdess Toune and the shepherd Pandidou, pursued by the horrible Gadiol. (From Pierre Macaire – Autour de la croix du Pic Saint-Loup).

But the location is also related to a very sad love story of the middle age.

In 2009, film director Jacques Rivette shot the film: 36 views of the Pic Saint-Loup.

Wines and Recipes

For wine lovers, on must say that this terroir provides a wide array of rich and well-balanced Red wines and fresh and delicate Rosé wines. Only those Red and Rosé Pic Saint-Loup wines benefit from an AOP, in other words a controlled Designation of Origin. Want to know more about?

An example of traditional local meal:  Tapenade of black olives, croquettes with partridge and truffle, and pie of foie gras “à la Cambacérès” with apples Le Vigan, a roast of lamb “à la Huguenotte” flavoured with cinnamon and cep mushrooms. And as for dessert, some oreillettes, a deliciously light and crisp pastry fritters and gingerbread!” according to the list from a novel by Dominique Lanni, and some of the recipes of the Chef Fabien Vié, native of Montpellier.
